In our last post, we talked about our favorite mineral, magnesium! And we wanted to show you that even if you’re not taking any prescriptions, you could be deficient in this precious mineral.
Your diet can deplete magnesium. Symptoms such as insomnia, constipation, and migraines, are just a few complaints associated with magnesium deficiency that may lead to unnecessary prescriptions!
But what if you are already taking a medication on a regular basis—could it be robbing you of magnesium?? In a word, YES!!
The biggest offender and robber of magnesium are acid blockers!! As you probably know, we at Two Hoots hate acid blockers!! They alter the acidity in your stomach and prevent breakdown of foods and absorption of nutrients! Ugh! And those acid blockers ROB you of magnesium! Antacids, such as Zantac, are also robbers, but their effect is shorter acting so if you must…
Another biggie is oral contraceptives (as well as other synthetic hormones). Young women taking birth control for years(even decades) run the risk of developing anxiety, migraines, and constipation. And older women (who may have been on birth control for years) are now taking synthetic hormones which can exacerbate their risk for osteoporosis, not to mention headaches, constipation and depression! You can probably see how those symptoms translate into, you guessed it, MORE prescriptions!! And the polypharmacy begins…
What else? Certain heart medications! Blood pressure drugs such as ACE-inhibitors/ARBs (lisinopril, losartan, or Diovan for example) and diuretics such as furosemide and HCTZ deplete magnesium through your kidneys. Anti-arrhythmia drugs, such as digoxin, also deplete this important mineral…and the kicker: low magnesium can lead to arrhythmias! It’s maddening isn’t it?
Others to consider: some asthma medications, that relax the smooth muscle in the lungs for ease in breathing, can deplete magnesium, leading to an inability for the smooth muscle to relax!! You see the pattern…Magnesium provides SO MANY health benefits that when its low you not only see more prescriptions to overcome the signs of deficiency, you see development of disease states! It makes us crazy!! Which, by the way, is also a potential problem…i.e. depression and anxiety!
Got bone health? Your bones risk developing osteoporosis without adequate amounts of magnesium. In fact, calcium relies on magnesium (and Vitamin D) to help build bone and prevent unnecessary breakdown of bone, particularly as we get older.
And remember the dietary deficiency? Well, in children that may translate to signs of ADHD ?. We’ve seen an incredible increase in the most commonly prescribed medication for ADHD, methylphenidate, which (are you ready for this?) also robs your child’s body of magnesium!
So hear us when we say “we need to supplement with magnesium!” Everyone benefits and particularly if you are already taking the aforementioned prescriptions! We recommend choosing a supplement such as magnesium glycinate or a chelated magnesium. The limiting factor for too much magnesium is loose or very frequent stools. Cut back your dose if you experience these signs.
And remember, we give Two Hoots about your Health! ?
